1. Good economical fax for home or small office
I use this in my home office. I don't send alot of faxes or make alot of copies so I didn't need anything fancy and didn't want anything overly technical or expensive. This fits my needs perfectly, beginning with its low cost ($59 new, after $10 rebate, from on-line merchant). It's small so doesn't hog desk space, easy to set up and use, has plenty of features (more than I'll ever need or use) and though the print quality isn't the best you'll ever see, it is easily legible and certainly satisfactory, for both faxing and copying. It may not be the machine for large offices or someone who sends alot of faxes or makes alot of copies, but, as an economical fax machine for occasional use in a home or small office, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one.

2. Not bad for infrequent use, especially if you mainly send
As the title states, this isn't a bad little fax for infrequent use, especially if you send faxes far more frequently than you receive them. The "test" cartridge doesn't last long, and replacements quickly add up to the cost of the fax if you receive a lot of faxes or use this as a copy machine as well (20 bucks for the cartridge that lasts for 150 pages, so final cost per page of over $0.13).

The quality of the output is fine, even on marginal-quality paper. Lots of features (including automatic fax/telephone switching), 10 page document feeder (although I've used it for more than 10 pages), scans documents fairly quickly.

Other than the high cost-per-page and the fact that the cartridge is a PITA to change compared to most other models, the only other gripe that I have is that the machine gives a "poor line condition" error when it has trouble feeding the paper (rather than blaming itself for the inability to feed paper reliably).

Cheaply put together
Very cheap plastic paper-feeder tray snapped in easily enough for me, but it never snapped back out, nor would it feed the paper used for fax confirmation in easily. The other feeding system for the actual faxes seemed to work just fine at first, but then I noticed the paper frayed noticeably on one side if you resent it several times--not a good flaw if you want to resend one page, like a resume, to multiple employers. One last drawback is the included ink cartridge that is meant only as a "test cartridge" for up to 30 pages of use. Then, for around $20, you are supposed to buy a replacement ink cartridge that will last for another 150 pages of use. Well, the price was nice, but the product was not. I bought this at Office Depot and to their credit, they gave me a full refund without any re-stocking or re-packing fees, quite unlike CompUSA's return policy. I feel sorry for the poor fellow who has to re-pack that thing, though. Good luck on getting that paper feeder back out.

1. Very Good Basic Fax Machine - Simple and Reliable!
I bought this fax machine for my 78 year old Mother. Seriously! I knew I had to buy her a machine that not only looked easy to operate but in fact was easy to operate. She had never used a fax machine before in her life...and for various reasons she had truly begun to need one. This model was exactly the answer. All buttons and controls are very clearly labeled. Messages are received with sharp clarity. And (despite the comment below!) she has yet to experience a paper jam. All in all this is an excellent machine. But why only 4 stars instead of the full 5? Because, for some reason, you can't really *request* a transmission report after faxing off a document. Instead, you can set the machine so that a report gets spit out after each and every transmission (kind of a waste of paper!) or you can choose to turn the whole report function off. Unfortunately you can't request a report for only certain transmissions. But in reality that's a minor drawback. All in all, this is a...

2. Good machine, burns through expensive cartridges
This machine works very well. You get good quality documents on reception, and it makes good quality copies. This machine is easy to use, and it is very reliable. For the 2 plus years I've had it, it has only jammed three times and even then it took only a second or two to clear the jam. That is thanks to a very simple paper path.

The downside is two-fold for me. First, if you want to use distinctive ring to answer the pohone, this machine requires 2 full rings to determine if it should answer the call. Unfortunately, the toll-saver setting for most answering machines is 2 rings, so that the answering will answer first. Many other fax machines can be programmed to answer on the first ring.

The second issue is bigger. Replacement cartridges are expenses (more than $30), so if you receive more than a few pages of fax a week be prepared to spend some money. Considering that the machine runs not much more than $100, this is expensive. And wait until you replace...

For the money this fax is a "work horse"
I was amazed at the high quality fax output that came from this machine. It is not advertised with major bells and whistles, however, the features it does have are very nice. Don't expect to be a local 'copy' center, but for the occasional copy, it does a fine job. I would prefer an ink cartridge, but you can't have it all.

1. Perfect Small Business Fax Machine
After our old HP fax (910 series, I believe) kept getting paper jams as part of its daily routine, we searched and decided to try this Brother fax. A huge plus was having a paper tray where the paper sits horizontally, like our HP printers. This Brother fax was easy to set up, easy to program, and is easy to use. This machine scans faxes into memory immediately after you press the start button, THEN dials out, so if you have more than one fax to send to different places, you do NOT have to wait for the first fax to send before you go on feeding the other pages through. What a wonderful feature to have after so many years of not! We also use the "Fax Broadcasting" feature daily; it's nice to get a report printed out after you 'broadcast' a fax to several people, telling you the time the fax went through to each person, and that the fax did, indeed, go through. This fax machine is on a dedicated fax line, not hooked up to our computer system, and has been a wonderful addition...

2. Great fax machine, great price!
My organization now owns three of these fax machines. Brother has great prices on their cartridges, these machines are easy to operate, the print-out quality is really good. We would recommend them without reservation.

Great laser fax for small business & cheap too
Used this fax machine in a site construction office for a 5 Million dollar school remodel project. Is a real workhorse without no jams, down time or trouble of any kind. Great machine.

Pros: Laser so faxes are crisp and clear and cost to operate is really cheap. No problem with operation, worked for 2 years on project with several thousand faxes. Can do one touch faxes or group send, all the features you would want.

Cons: I can't think of any, it worked in a very dirty environment, dusty construction site and is still working.

2. No warnings on the box - but good enough!
Oh how I wanted this, I like brother printers - and a wireless one that supports OS9 OSX, and Windows too, USB, wireless, or ethernet - wowee! Then I opened the box, does not do wireless with OS9. Oh well, then I plugged it in and every UPS in my office chimed and the lights flickered when I turn it on. Yep, even plugged straight into the wall, this room heater uses 9.1 Amps, and I bet 11 when it first powers up. So, this just won't work in an average home office - we have 15 amp lines - a few computers, a TV, a radio, a light, and that can add up to 7 amps - add this fax machine and pop a breaker. I never got a chance to test it, but it sure sounds good. If you have a 20-amp circuit, or can dedicate a 15-amp circuit to it, I'm sure it's a great machine.

Fantastic for the price
I bought this printer from Costco and got the wireless feature for the same price as the non-wireless version with a rebate. It's works extremely well. It's very fast and the quality is excellent. I was unsure whether I needed the duplexing feature but since I have it, I use it all the time and am very pleased that I opted for this model. No, this machine cannot print on envelopes. Don't even try it. I don't need this feature so I can get over it. I print on labels instead. The Brother software is easy to use and works well. I love being able to scan into a pdf document or email directly from a scan. The auto document feeder works very well. I have no complaints other than the envelope problem. I defintely recommend this machine. It does everything I need, very well and for a very reasonable price.

This unit was purchased for a small business from Office Depot. It is heavily used for faxing and printing. Occasionally we use the scanning function. Everything works great!!! Extremely fast. Warms up almost instantaneously. Never have to wait. Paper path is greatly improved from older units where paper kept on getting stuck. Toner price is great and much cheaper per page than other products out there. We have it set up on our office network and it works flawlessly. Overall, we are very happy with it. Will provide updates as we spend more time with it. Because we got $100 off during an office depot sale, we got a great deal....

It can print from mobile devices like iphones, ipads, and android phones and tablet but we have not explored that yet. Also we have not taken advantage of its wireless functionality yet...

2. By far the best printer I've ever owned--and I've gone through several
I'm a business owner and my printers are used in a small office. My last printer was a Brother 9440 and it was okay until it started bleeding color stripes down each page--made me rethink having a color printer when I seldom use color.

This printer is a HUGE leap forward in every way (without the color). There is virtually no warm-up, click print and it does. Duplexing is built in (I never forked over the extra $$ for a duplexing tray before) AND it will copy then print both sides in a single pass almost as fast a one sided! Last but not least I'm actually able to use the enormous software suite that used to just drain my time; when you click SCAN TO EMAIL up pops your new email with a .pdf file attached--I can't tell you how much time I've wasted on this because the previous software didn't work well.

I don't do a lot of reviews but this one was worth the time; hopefully it will help small businesses (and others) with their decision.

Works fine...unless you have Windows 8
This printer has great functionality - the scanning works very well, it prints quickly and is easy to use with my husband's Windows 7 laptop. Unfortunately it doesn't print at all with my Windows 8 laptop. I have made numerous calls to Brother, Lenovo and Microsoft to try and resolve this issue and they all blame each other for the problem. Brother finally released their Win8 driver last week and my computer will not install the printer driver due to a kernel mode driver error.

If you need a dedicated fax machine for a small or medium sized off then the Brother 2800 may be just the right choice. It is a solid performer that offers a low cost per page and includes pretty much every feature that you would need in a black and white fax machine.

Nowadays it is not particularly sexy to "just" be a fax machine, but in many situations you are better off having a fax machine seperate from your copy machine, seperate from your printer. At our 20 person office that is certainly true. We had a multifunction machine and it was used to much which created lots of complexity for those of us sharing it. LInes waiting for a fax to be received so we could print, waiting to make copies while a long document is printing, and confusion over how to install and setup access for everyone's PC.

We tried to find a less expensive standalone machine but could not find one that seemed well buiilt and cost effective. The color fax machines are ink jet based and cost a lot...

2. Really Good Home Office Fax
I purchased this fax two weeks ago. I use it several times a week both incoming and outgoing. The toner save feature is excellent. Copies and incoming faxes are clear and easy to read. I really like it over the all-in-one Canon that I had been using. It's a relief not to have it tied into my computer. The only reason I gave it only a 4-star rating has to do with legal-sized paper. When there are several pages going thru, and they start to come out of the feeder, they tend to not come all the way out and get in each other's way..somehow or other this will create every other page to turn itself over. You may have to watch the fax in process, in order to keep your pages from doing this and eventually falling out of the guide. I have not experienced any problems using letter-sized paper at all. I love this machine
After going through 2 panasonic fax machines and having to but cartridgres every 7-10 days this fax machine was a godsend the toner that came with my machine lasted for about 4 months and I receive faxes on a daily basis. The machine was so easy to set up and it practically works by itself. On my Panasonics I would have to sit there and hand feed thing I had to fax 1 by one I dont have that problem anymore. The images that you send and receive are so quality that my job called me because they could tell I had brought a new machine. I would recomend this machine to anyone with a small business or who works from home because the quality is great. It cost a little more but it well worth it.

It took less than 10 min. to unpack, read the instructions, and set up wirelessly. The instructions are clear as long as you follow the table of contents and page numbers according to your computer network setup. Once the printer was connected, I intiated a print job from my Macbook Air and it automatically downloaded the software and drivers (no need to use the installation CD). I did have to search for "Brother" to locate where the program downloaded to so I could place a shortcut on the desktop. Scanning is quick and easy.

AirPrint works quickly and easily with my iPad. You can also download the Brother app to scan to an iOS device.

As for printing and scanning speed, to me it's really fast because I had been using a Canon multi function laser printer for the last seven years. I have not used the ADF much yet but it seems to work fine. The durability and frequency of paper jams...

2. Brother MFC-8710DW All-in-one Laser printer
After the initial hiccup the product seems to be working great so far.

When I first turned on the printer, it tripped the circuit breaker in the room. I took a look at the specs and the printer is rated at 10 amps and the circuit breaker is 15 amps. I had read about this with other reviewers on this product. So it seemed that I was going to have to return this back to Amazon which seemed to be a daunting task somewhat given the size of the printer. I tried calling Brother and they have a 1-800 number on the box but it was the weekend and that was a no go.

So I decided to call my electrician and he resolved the problem for me but it required a change of the circuit breaker. It turned out that most rooms are equipped with an ARC type circuit breaker which trips if an arc is detected. He stated that many small appliances generate an arc including ceiling fans and some of the earlier or older ARC breakers were "too sensitive" to this and eventually were modified to...

Best choice for Mac based multi-function machine

1. Nice multifunction that could use some improvements
I bought the 8860DN a couple weeks ago to replace my aging HP 3330. While I'm quite happy with much of the 8860DN, there are a few things that could use improvement. Some of these can be addressed in software, others I fear are hardware issues.

BTW, I'm on my second machine because I thought some of the issues with the first warranted a replacement. Now I know its a "common" issue.

1) The print engine creaks and makes popping sounds as the fuser heats and cools. Even the demo machine in Office Depot does the same thing. The creaking is really annoying if you sit near the machine. A Brother senior tech rep tells me this issue is common to many Brother lasers. Well, gimme a break because HP and others don't creak! **UPDATE** Brother Corporate office tells me the popping sounds are considered "normal" by the engineers and at this time they have no plans to fix. Pathetic if you ask me. I think most users will agree!!!

After reading reviews here I hesitated but happened to see the same machine (but without duplex capability) at a work site and that clinched it for me.

This machine is FAST. Setup is easy (I used the network connection) and the software is vastly improved over the last Brother laser I had (an HL-1270N).

The ticking noises other reviews mention is very slight and lasts just a few seconds while it heats up. Previous lasers I've had would typically whir loudly during this warm-up time - not this one. I sit next to the printer and it's really nothing. I think people have noticed it because it occurs in silence without other whiring sounds. The noise of the paper pick up (which is typical of any laser printer) is louder than the ticking (heating) sounds and the ticking stops before the first page comes out (so it lasts mere seconds). 5 seconds ticking, 5 seconds whiring and printing, page comes out. Followed by maybe 20-30 very small ticks over the next few minutes as...

Great Multi-Function Machine
Having had bad experiences with multi-function machines in the past, I over-researched this purchase. To begin with, this machine's specs are top notch for the money. You simply cannot get this much bang for your buck from any other company. Taking the machine out of the box and setting it up was remarkably easy. I actually thought I was forgeting something. The software installed cleanly and is user-friendly. I should mention, however, that I have not gone through the fax machine setup (not using for that purpose at the present time). Also, the machine does not come with a USB cable, which is, unfortunately, fairly standard with printers today.

Prints and copies at 30 ppm in 600 dpi. I have tested this and it appears fairly close to true (maybe a little slower, like 28 ppm). It produces nice, crisp clear letters in both print and copy modes. The 50 page ADF is made from a reasonably sturdy plastic. At least it doesn't feel like it is going to come loose or break...

1. Truly a Business Fax
I debated and researched for weeks on different fax machines and brands. I had an older brother fax machine (5-6 years). It worked great but I had broken one of the trays and didn't hold a lot of paper. I debated some of the Multi-function copier-printer-faxes. For only a few dollars more I could get one that duplexes and every other option imaginable. I have a copier. I have printers. I needed a fax. I receive 100-150 faxes a day. This is simply a great fax machine. Nothing more and absolutely nothing else. It is quiet and extremely fast. "Pick one thing and do it great" - this is what this machine does. It isn't OK at a lot. It's great at one thing. It sends and receives faxes.

2. Excellent!
I own a store that sends faxes for customers, and I can tell you that this is a great fax machine for high volume faxing. Machines I've had in the past would choke on documents on even the lightest pastel colors. The scanning engine on this machine sees the background color, and ignores it, allowing those pages to be sent as quickly as if they were on bright white paper. No longer do I need to copy documents on color paper before faxing.

Some other reviews complain about a clicking sound. I have to listen very closely to hear what it is they're talking about. I'd have to guess that these people are used to inkjet fax machines. Most laser printer/fax machines make a heck of a lot more noise than this baby does. I'm amazed at how quiet it really is! It makes so little noise that I've had to set it to ring twice before recieving. Other laser fax machines that I've owned make so much noise I didn't need a ring to hear from across the store that they were recieving a fax. This...

A no-brainer-of-a-purchase
First, let me disclose that I do not own this unit, but I do own what appears to be its predecessor, the MFC 8500 (now discontinued). The 4750e (curiously 1/2 the model number I have) has the same form-factor, the same button layout, the same toner cartridge and the same features but with better technical specifications, e.g. faster fax modem. I AM IN LOVE WITH THE BROTHER MFC 8500 and would guess that this one will provide similar results. I think it's significant that my two-year-old unit never dropped more than $50 in price up to its discontinuation, and its replacement--this unit--is about $100 higher in price. The toner cartridge is cheap compared to other laser printers. The pop-up screen (when linked to a PC) provides simple and intuitive copy, fax and e-mail menus. I've never had to read the manual. 1. As a network printer it works great, but...
I also have a problem with the printer creasing envelopes. It appears to shift the flap of the envelope slightly while feeding it through the fuser and the heat and pressure causes another crease about 1/8" offset from the original one.

I returned the first unit that I ordered because of a loud squeaking noise that developed while printing. The second unit also squeaks somewhat (Certainly more than my old mfc-8820D), but it doesn't sound like it's dragging a cat through the manual feed slot.

There's a big difference between this unit and my MFC-8820D in the scanning area. On my old printer, I could input an email address on the screen and it would forward the document to that address. This guy requires you to select a network computer and then sends the document there. A memory resident program needs to be running on the computer to process the received document...which is a worthless waste of memory space about 99.99% of the time when the computer is doing...

2. The Brother MFC 8460N creases envelopes
I have been unable to get this machine to stop creasing envelopes. It looks quite sloppy and affects the print in places. At times it is better than others but usually I get a big crease across the bottom left corner and a smaller crease across the return address.

I have spent a lot of time on the phone working with Brother technicians to correct the problem. They had me flip up the #1 toggles in the back of the machine, try using many different kinds of envelopes, try changing the paper thickness settings, etc. One even suggested I get 20 pound envelopes but those are quite uncommon. The typical #10 business envelope is 24 pounds. I could not find any 20 pound envelopes in local stores or print shops.

I have had a problem hooking it up through my network with the ethernet connection. It worked for quite a while but stopped working and I could not get it started again, even by reloading the driver or with the new machine. This problem could be my network, not...

Super fast little guy
We have been using this printer for a little over a month now at work where we print an average of about 100 pages a day and this little guy chugs through it like it was nothing. The best part of it all is the speed. It is quick to warm up and prints 30ppm, which is a billion times faster than our previous Brother printer (or so it seems). The print quality is excellent but so are most laser printers so that's not really a stand-out. As mentioned by everyone else here, the envelopes do get a little crinkled when they are printed through the printer but that beats our last brother printer that seemed to jam more often than not when printing envelopes. I have yet to have an envelope jam. A trade off (crinkled envelope to jammed envelope) we are willing to take any day. To print an enveiope you have to open a little door in the front of the printer to access the feed for it. Not a big deal but I thought I would mention it. So, why four stars? So far so good. This is a more production level fax machine for day-to-day use. I put it into our warehouse operations where they have to fax a lot of things to shippers etc. Holds up to the daily use and different people using it.

We needed a simple fax with few controls and one that was easy to use. This fit the bill. I had to give no training to people using it. Toner is simple to replace. The only thing it is missing is a visible paper indicator to tell me its low on paper. Not a big deal but would have been nice.

1. Reliable little workhorse; best toner cost
This is my second brother laser fax machine; I replaced the first after 5+ years to get the 33.6 increased speed, not because it wore out (or broke). I have had it over 13 months and remain glad I upgraded; it's fast enough both in and out (just saw the review complaining about this when I came to Amazon to buy toner). Maybe commercial fax machines are faster but for my home based business its quite sufficient(1 to 50 page faxes are my norm). What I really like about Brother is the ink cartridges; use them for my laser printer needs too. My cost per page are lower than HP ever was and I prefer having a dedicated fax better then an all in one. The only thing I would change about Brother is the firm's lack of recycling involvement. They do not provide a prepaid label so I have to drop the cartridges elsewhere.

2. Not a great machine, but where do you find a better one?
We bought this fax machine on the basis of the reviews above. We are certainly not very happy with it, compared to our HP old inkjet fax which finally bit the dust.

It seems not all that fast, as it reads everything, puts it into the memory and then faxes it.
The display is not large and is generally not very helpful,eg when a fax hasn't gone through and is waiting to redial, it states that the machine is sleeping, so you cannot tell by looking at the machine that the fax has not gone through yet. I am not a mindreader so cannot tell that the machine is waiting for 5 minutes to redial.

Design - the buttons for the automatic dialing are very small. The output tray gets in the way of my sleeve when I use the buttons.

The print-outs are horrible. The quality is like something out of the dark ages, it is so dotty. It shows the number of the fax as the left hand column, something we don't need to know.

Finally a Fax with Excellent Resolution!
I couldn't get clear enough resolution on the cheaper Brother Fax. This is important to me because I work with a lot of numbers. This 2920 Fax finally answers my need for clarity without even using the Fine Resolution button. It also was easy--intuitive--to set up and get started right away.

Bought this to have a fax machine at home. It was easy to set up. Doesn't take up much space on the desk and you have a built in phone with caller ID, too. The copy machine part of fax makes nice clean copies, too. This wouldn't be very cost effective if you are going to receive a lot of faxes or make a lot of copies. It is great for someone like me who has to fax stuff for work occasionally and doesn't want to drive to the library and pay $2.00 a page.

I actually picked this fax machine up at a local retailer when I saw it in a weekly advertisement. It was 30 bucks after rebate. I thought it would be a great value since I occasionally (but not often) need to fax for the business I run out of my home.

I'm highly skeptical of any inexpensive printing device, since manufacturers usually get your money on the replacement ink cartridges. I had no intention of using this machine for printing anything -- only SENDING faxes.

I was aware that fax resolution is always low compared to resolution of scanning a document or photo copying it. But, I figured all fax machines would be equally "low resolution". How tough can it be to hit a low standard?

It is NOT a business machine on any level. As with most things in life you get what you pay for, and this fax provides great value for its price.

1. Just the fax, man...
If you're looking for a fax for your home office and don't want to spend a fortune, this is the fax for you. It is simple to set up, uses plain copy paper and takes up little space. The only down side is, it wasn't compatible with our voicemail system and we can't use the auto answer mode. Since we mostly use this for outgoing faxes, we're fine. We just have to manually switch it over to fax mode to receive. If you need the auto answer, check the specs carefully before you buy this one.

2. paper jams
I had a earlier model so I thought when it was time to get a new one I would purchase another Brother. I bought this one for our home office because it said it had 10 page faxing ability. The print quality is the same as the previous model, which is low, but standard for fax machines. The trouble is, if you want to fax multiple pages, the machine jams. You need to stand there, when it is faxing, to make sure the paper is feeding straight. I have found it impossible to fax more than 3 pages at one time and even with this the paper jams.

This replaces an older Brother sheet roll fax, this is easy to set up right out of the box, you will be sending and receiving faxes in 5 minutes. The cartridgesare easy to replace as well. Brother makes some good products.

1. Better than the 2800
If you're in the market for a fax machine this is the one. I also owned the Brother 2800. This is the new and revised version of the 2800. Apparently Brother does improve upon their faults. You can see my review on the 2800 and the downfalls. For a re-cap:

1. 2800 had paper jams when using old paper. The 2820 has a paper feeder like their printers which greatly reduces jams. (I also own brothers laser printer) Now I can use recycled (one-side already printed) paper and not have to deal with jams. Also 2820 holds much more paper in its tray, so you wont have to worry about running out.

2. 2820 has a new feed system which reduces jams when faxing out. I had problems faxing 20+ pages with the 2800, now none with 2820. However they say there is a limit to 20 pages (just add more pages as they feed through).

3. The only downfall is the toner is slightly more expensive. It does print more pages, but does cost a bit more. Fax machine is more...

2. Great Machine!!!!
We've went through a lot of machines in our business, several different cannon multipasses, lexmark x125, and even an hp or two. I was a little apprehensive to try the brother as most of their products looked a little wonky. Not this machine though. This thing is solid. The architecture is great. The features are easy to use. (please note we use this as a stand alone fax and as an occasional copier, but not as a printer, so you will have to do your own research on that part) We have two fax lines and two machines, and speed is an essence in our job. I was a bit worried that this thing would take a long time to wake up, warm up and print, but it doesn't. No matter how long the machine has set there unused it will be warm before the first page of the fax is received and print it out about two seconds later. The paper tray is great and easy to load.

The only things that brother could improve we be a 500 sheet paper tray (it has a 250 sheet tray which is miles ahead...

Very good value
I purchased this fax machine to replace an inkjet fax which was really expensive on ink. It seemed like every other time I wanted to receive a fax or make a copy, I would have to replace the $25 ink cartridge again.

This fax machine makes copies much more quickly (and cheaply, and with better quality) than the old fax. It holds about twice as much paper. You can also schedule faxes to be sent later, and to multiple recipients.

One more advantage of this machine is that you can hook it up to a computer through USB and use it as a normal laser printer. I tried it, and it works great, and FAST compared to my HP Deskjet.

If you're concerned about junk faxes wasting money on ink, or if you want ot make a lot of copies, or if you need both a printer and a fax machine and want to save money by buying just one, this machine is a very good investment.

How to configure Brother IntelliFax-4100E for VoIP
Here is the procedure to configure Brother 4100e fax machines to work with faxing over VoIP.

Enter Maintenance Mode:

1. Unplug power from rear of fax machine, hold the Menu button while plugging power back in. Continue to hold the Menu button until "Maintenance" appears in the LCD window.
2. There are no helps for the Maintenance mode. Follow parameter change procedures to the letter.

Changing Baud Rate from Automatic to 9600:

1. Enter 10 (one, zero). This will bring up WSW00 on the LCD window.
2. Change the 00 to 19. If the baud rate is set to automatic, the numbers that appear will be 11100010.
3. Change the 11100010 to 01100010. This sets the baud rate to 9600.
4. Press the "Set" button just below the LCD window.
5. Press "Stop".
6. Enter 99. This will exit Maintenance mode and make the fax ready to use again.

1. Just right for our home business
I had this Brother Printer, Scanner, Copier, Fax unit up and running in less than an hour after the UPS driver brought it to my front door. I had planned to spend the whole afternoon getting it set up, so this was an amazing surprise. Installing the four ink cartridges was a simple and straightforward process, somewhat easier than ink cartridge installation on my Epson printer.
The area where our desks and router live is kind of tight, so I opted to go completely wireless and set the unit up on the other end of the room that serves as our home office. The unit quickly synched with our wireless home network and in less than another hour I had the supporting software installed on two desktop computers and a laptop and was able to print effortlessly with all three.
Next, I downloaded and installed the Brother iPrint & Scan app from the iTunes Store and had no trouble printing from my iPhone 5.

2. Good Quality, Not that easy to set up (Wi-Fi)
This is a beautiful Printer. It has all the bells and whistles.
It is capable of up to A3 prints.
It does printer, scanner, fax.

It is pretty much straightforward to install. Turn it on, follow the steps on the touch screen (tilt able) to plug the ink cartrige (4 of them).
Then insert the CD in the computer you intend to use mainly with it, connect the USB cable and you should be set in about 10mn...
The programs do take a while to install and install at least 4 applications.

It took me a while to realize too that my new Comcast router was Wi-Fi and that this printer was compatible with it. I had been trying to connect it though my Linksys Wi-Fi which although detected had encryption that was not recognized.
Once this was understood, the set up went faster.

With the WiFI, I can print from my I-Phone and it is pretty fast too.

1. BUY THIS MACHINE.
Buy this machine! If you are in the market for an office printer this BROTHER MFC-J220 should fit the bill. I wanted a photo printer primarily, but also wanted to have the capability to FAX, SCAN, COPY and make phone calls. This does all that and yes, rather bloody well! I have a BROTHER HL-5140 laser printer also and this has never failed me. So I thought, why not buy a reliable photo printer of the same elk? GOOD DECISION!
The unit is very stylish in black and the controls are all well thought out. It is so easy to set up and use I felt tickled. Software is included so you can link your computer with the printer in a very painless fashion. I am very happy with my purchase. I wanted a back-up printer to my MFC6490CW so it was important that the back-up printer used the same print cartridges. This unit is very compact and does a beautiful print job and has a very good print speed. All the controls are nicely laid out. I am very happy with this purchase.

Good machine
If your looking for a good little printer that does what the company says it will do, this one will work for you. Admittedly, I haven't tried the fax feature yet, but if it's like the rest of the machine it'll set-up and work easily. Printed plain paper pictures very well, text is clear and the scanner, well, it scanned!
